My journey started on the mat…
With a yoga practice that began over twenty years ago, during my first year in college, I have long practiced a unique blend of body movement, breath work and spirituality.
In 2008 I began teaching yoga while pregnant with my first child. Practicing yoga through my pregnancy was the first awakening to the magnetic force of the feminine spirit. With my first baby, I began practicing infant massage and immediately recognized the benefits of nurturing, loving touch between mother and child. I continued to practice and teach yoga and infant massage through my second and third child.
At the time…
I was also working full time in a lucrative sales career. My career was fun and it felt really good to be so successful. I had my daughter, my third child, in 2015 but returned to work quickly, eager to escape the humdrum life of diapers and sleepless nights.
My yoga practice and teaching faltered and eventually I gave it up.
A few years later…
I looked around to realize my life was not one I wanted to be living. I was unhappy and stressed, and eventually diagnosed with depression and anxiety. I began medication and therapy and also tentatively stepped back into my mat to resume my study of yoga.
When my husband’s company offered him a position across the country, we decided this might be the fresh start our family needed. I could take a break from my career, focus on our growing children, and reorient myself to my true calling.
But becoming a stay at home mother after years of success in my career was a tremendous shock to my identity and ego.
Suddenly I felt disempowered, invisible to the world, with no social status of my own. I went from feeling so clear about my value to questioning every aspect of my life, simply because I was doing something so fundamentally female.
And so I found myself redefining my role as a mother. Embodying my yoga teachings to view every interaction with my three children as a chance to reveal my Self and shed the Ego. Because THIS is the true calling. My children are not here to fulfill my egoic fantasies. My children are here to challenge ME, over and over and over again, into releasing MY ego. I am called into the deepest level of self-awareness and non-attachment as I navigate my relationships with each child. Mothering is the hardest job there is, but not in the ways I expected. I’ve grown more as a human while consciously raising my children than in any time I spent in meditation or yoga.
Mothering isn’t easy, but it can be fulfilling in ways you didn’t even imagine.
